Event Registration form creating Duplicate Constituents Merged

Using the event registration forms has been great and overall easy. However, when people use the form, oftentimes duplicate constituent records are created. Various reasons for this I'm sure (info entered doesn't match, duplicates already exist and the system doesn't know which one the registrant is referring to, etc).

It would be great if there was an option to NOT have new constituents created if a match isn't found (if it does find a match then great, please connect them). Then, maybe, we can filter the event participants based on whether or not they've been paired with an existing constituent (like how we can filter by RSVP: Attending). It would be easier to match these records with an existing constituent if we want to than having to remove all the duplicates that are created.

We currently have 255 duplicates because 282 preregistered for VBS. We have found most of the duplicates are created when its a parent registering a child and a payment is involved (Half of our duplicates created bought a VBS t-shirt with their registration.) We just happened to have another event during the same time frame that preregistered 100 youth that wasn't selling any t-shirts and none of those were duplicated. So then we investigated our kids camp and and sure enough they were all duplicated as well. Seems like a glitch in the system. I am currently waiting for my case into this problem to be made a solution. I am hoping our headaches helps solve this solution.

Creating all these duplicates and then having to go in and merge constituents and then delete the inactive record is a lot of duplicate effort. We are a small church and it is time consuming for us - I can't imagine what a big church has to go through!
